The Tickled Cow
Designing a modern restaurant experience focused on you.
A tradition improved
Dining out has been with us for as long as history. Using intuitive design and connected technologies, we made it better.
The Tickled Cow is a project briefed to me (and the group I worked with) by CHS, an award winning creative agency based in Bournemouth.
This was a real opportunity to see how my skills fare against a real world design work. I loved every moment of working on this project, and the result is something I am very proud of.
We were asked to deliver a comprehensive brand identity, tailored to a specific audience, create a well thought out menu for the restaurant, design a website for it, and explore new opportunities the restaurant might want to take on.
What I did
Brand identity, App concept, design and prototype, Website design and development.
A cuddly bearded man of a restaurant
Reassuringly rugged yet fresh. Fresh but classy. Approachable but respectable. We developed a brand to stand out from the competition in central London. A place for a quick lunch and a family gathering meal.
Tone of voice
Friendly and informal
Warm and welcoming
Personal and conversational
Pride in service
Part of the challenge of this brief was to consider and craft a specific tone of voice for the brand. This means the general spirit and sense of communication with each customer.
Every restaurant has it. Some are nice, some are awful, some are amazing. Menus are a practice as old as time, and an element that is expected in any food place. There is an incredibly large amount of psychology packed into this usually fairly small piece of paper. The design aspect of a menu relates more to layout, placement, and tiny details like whether to include the £ symbol or not to. Every single detail on the page has it’s purpose. The ultimate goal for the restaurant is to make a profit, and make the customer happy whilst doing it.
This was a large part of the project that I took up out of curiosity and passion. I really wanted to create the user experience we talked about so much. So I came up with a concept for a mobile app, that would allow the clients to open a virtual table when they arrive at the restaurant. This would allow them to see their order immediately after ordering. Calling over a waiter could also now be done just by tapping a button on your phone.
The webiste for The Tickled Cow was one of the deliverables for this brief, though our team focused mostly on the app for the most portable and awesome user experience. The website is an accompanying tool created to work side to side with the app, though the functionality is limited to booking a table, finding the restaurant, viewing the menu and learning about the app.
Special thanks to CHS Creative for providing us with this brief and all of their feedback and critique. To the AUB course staff for arranging this project, and to my teammates for a great experience working on this.
